Laufey’s ‘Lover Girl’ strikes the right chords on the whimsical nature of love and emotion
The Icelandic musician puts a unique spin on the expression of love, all while keeping the song fully hers in every sense of the word.
The bossa nova genre is one that you don’t see very often in today’s music. It was massively relevant in the 1960s, and tapered off as time went on. That’s why Laufey and her usage of the genre — not just here on the song Lover Girl — but also in a lot of her work as an artist, has carved out a wonderful niche on this front.
Lover Girl is a tale about being so deeply in love with another person that it almost feels like a “curse” to care so deeply about one another. It’s an all-too-real feeling of being lovesick when the person you care so much about isn’t there from time to time. This is dove into deeper within the mention of never thinking that she would actually be in the position she’s in, with “Love-struck girl, I’d tease her”, being a focal point of the chorus. This foreign feeling is one that Laufey is well aware of, as she would be teasing someone else in this position, going on to commend her love interest for being stuck in her mind only adds to the feeling of love being so strong for her.
The bossa nova style of music for this track creates an uptempo pace, which is a nice change of pace from the ballads that love songs generally tend to be. Laufey’s voice floats on this track, creating a wonderful harmony between the production and vocals, and she really shines. The style isn’t one we’re highly familiar with in today’s music landscape, but it’s a wonderful track.
