In one of the best, randomest surprises of the summer, experimental pop group Animal Collective have dropped Love On the Big Screen, a thumping single that marks their first material since 2023’s Isn’t It Now? The three-minute pop powerhouse owes as much to the great, late Brian Wilson as it does the Collective’s previous work, like 2009’s My Girls or Summertime Clothes. It’s unclear if this release means the Maryland quartet have another album — what would be their thirteenth overall — in the works, but at least we have a shiny new dance number to add to the summer night playlist. With warped, Beach Boys-ish vocals and pounding drumbeat, Love On the Big Screen will please longtime fans of the Collective and the great unwashed alike.

Love On the Big Screen is out now via Domino Records.
