Psych-rockers Oral Habit drop electrifying debut ‘Garage Frock!’
The fuzz-rock indie trio from Brighton release their four-track debut EP, offering up 10 minutes of mayhem and genre mastery.
From the first barbed-wire chords of opener Garage Frock, it’s clear Oral Habit’s debut EP lives up to the name, embodying the best of latter-day garage crunch and throwing nuance to the wind. Echoing the likes of Osees and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s first few albums, there’s a clear psych-meets-garage sound here, continuing into the lowdown and dirty Sauerkraut.
I’m Free is the most ‘indie’ number of the bunch, like something from the early demos of The Vaccines’ What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?. It’s got vocals that sound like they were recorded three doors down, shrill drum work and ‘60s Californian surf guitar. The Coast, meanwhile, is a deceptive closer, building into what ends up being the sludgiest offering of the suite.
In just four tracks and ten minutes, trio Oral Habit have concocted a battery on the ears, but one which warrants replay after replay. For fans of the current punk revival and noise-rock scene (think Gurriers, Beans, Fat Dog), Garage Frock! may just be your new favourite release.
Garage Frock! is out July 11th.
